About the Artwork |

My name is Susan deGeneres and I create my art from a variety of different mediums, including various clays; paper and papier maché; fabric, yarn and other fibers; and all sorts of found objects. In addition, I will often use wire, wood and even Styrofoam to form armatures that give my characters strength and stability.
Many things inspire my artwork: nature; vintage toys and holiday decorations; song lyrics and folktales; people; and particularly, animals. I may look at a vintage coffee can or the neighborhood cats playing in my garden and I’ll get an idea about it. In my studio, I’ll often make a quick sketch and then go through my cupboards pulling out clay or papier maché, sheets of paper, fabric and different trinkets, and I’ll think about color.
Color is important to me; it can dramatically change the mood or look of a piece of art, perhaps more than any other element you may incorporate. So it’s important to get it right.
Once I start to work, time seems to stand still or fly bye, I’m not sure which sometimes. And when I’m done, I’m ready to pass it on to someone who will feel a little of what I felt while I was making it. |
