About Susan deGeneres, the Artist

Creating art has always been a part of me, a lifelong passion to express myself through color and form.  While I haven’t had any formal training, other than a few wonderful grade school art teachers, there are generations of talented people in my family, and I’ve learned a lot from them.  Most importantly, I’ve learned that heart and soul and simple materials can create a thing of beauty and value.

My great-grandfather was a wood carver (he’d say “whittler”) and he made the most extraordinary things.  As a child, I remember being entranced by a church that he made for my mother.  It’s white with a tall steeple and wooden door.  When you open the door and look inside, or peer through one of the many windows, you see rows and rows of hand-carved pews and in the front, a pulpit and a portrait of Mary and Baby Jesus done in soft dreamy colors.  It remains one of the most magical things I have ever seen.

I hope my art touches you in that way.
